PROFESSIONAL SKILLS
Malaria vector control: Academically qualified and with experience in public health entomology and parasitology with respect to malaria control. Involved in malaria vector control initiatives for 39 years and have worked with different organizations and institutions in different capacities with the objective of fighting malaria. Participated in malaria vector control programmes focusing on the use of bed nets of all types including insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs), larviciding, indoor-residual spraying (IRS), biological control and the use of insect repellents.
Capacity strengthening: Apart from vector control activities, I have been involved in capacity strengthening programmes such as training junior malaria vector control staff from different institutions and districts e.g. malaria focal persons. Worked at different times as a Technical Advisor for institutions and organizations engaged in malaria control. Served as a member of the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) Technical Advisory Committee for over 20 years. A member of the Zanzibar Malaria Elimination Programme Technical Advisory Committee for over 10 years. Between 2005 -7, worked together with ZAMEP entomology team to establish an insectary and ELISA laboratory at the ZAMEP-HQ, and is still functional.
Managerial skills: From 2002 to 2004 I served as Deputy Director of the Centre for Enhancement of Effective Malaria Interventions (CEEMI), under the training wing of NIMR (2002 – 2004). The Centre was funded by Gates Malaria Partnership. I was responsible for the day to day running of 1 the Centre and to write proposals for different programmes undertaken by the Centre. The Centre was also working jointly and in support of NMCP.
Consultancy: With over 40 years of experience in evaluating different insecticidal products submitted to the Registrar of Pesticides for registration and public health use against pests of public health importance in Tanzania. These include aerosols, mosquito coils, repellents, ITNs, LLINs, IRS formulations and larvicides.
University teaching: Mwanza University (MzU) – 2021 To-date (Parasitology and Entomology) Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) – 2011-2016 (EIA, Research Methodology and Water and Sanitation). University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) (Parasitology, Entomology, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Environmental science and Biostatistics). Supervised many undergraduate and postgraduate students. Served as external examiner to other universities including Kilimanjaro Christian Medical University College (KCMUC) and Botswana University (Maun campus).
Other tutorships: Vector Control Training Centre (VCTC), Tanga/Muheza (1984-1991) and as visiting lecturer and external examiner at the same Centre on many occasions.
Part-time teaching staff at Nelson Mandela Institution of Science and Technology, after retirement (2016-2021).
